A passion project dreamed up by a group of friends in 2000 to create quality wines in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Two years later they planted 27 hectares of vineyards which they farm organically. In 2012, Bodegas Hacienda Monasterio became a shareholder of Montecastro, taking on the technical, wine-making and sales management. Their first vintage released was the 2012, in 2015. There 2016 vintage is (94%) Tempranillo and (6%) Cabernet Sauvignon- to give it a little extra structure. The fruit was 80% destemmed, and had a long, cold maceration time, barrel-aged for 17 months. The nose is full of creamy red fruit, underbrush, a touch of balsamic, and eucalyptus, with silky, well integrated tannins, elegant and persistent, with amazing aging potential.
