Gavin Chanin might as well have Pinot for blood; his father worked at Zaca Mesa Winery alongside the biggest names in the Central Coast wine scene and Gavin got his start at a very early under Jim Clendenen. Gavin worked some if his first harvests before he could legally drink, and founded Chanin Wine Company in 2007 at the ripe old age of 21! He works exclusively with Burgundian varieties in Santa Barbara County. The vineyards are on soils of shale, loam, and limestone and the wine is fermented ~30% whole cluster aged in 25% new French oak. Red fruit all up in your face, some subtle oak spices, just a hint of earth. Juicy, Fresh, and balanced, the first time I tried this wine i was so hungover I thought I’d die, but still said, “woah, holy shit” when I took a sip.
