Nicosia Etna Rosso 'Vulka' Nerello Mascalese
Grape: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio
Back in 1898 Francesco Nicosia, the great-grandfather of the current owner, decided to open his first wine shop in Trecastagni, on the eastern slope of Mount Etna. These days Nicosia is a modern, dynamic winery, but traditions are still key to the family. It is headed by Carmelo Nicosia, and his sons Francesco and Graziano and a close-knit team. Vulkà is classic expression of Etna, intensely mineral, linear and persistent on the palate, and full of red berried fruit, plum, savoury spice and pepper, with a hint of florally. The blend is 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio half aged in stainless steal, and the other half aged in a mix of barriques and old oak casks. This wine has potential to get even sexier with age (as do we all) but don’t let that stop you from enjoying it now. This wine is hella versatile, but one of the classic Etna Rosso pairings is with tuna!
