Weninger Blaufränkisch Burgenland
If you’re a Pinot Noir drinker but you don’t always have Pinot Noir money, have I got the wine for you… Blaufränkisch (Frankovka, Lemberger, Kékfrankos, depending on where it’s grown)!
With a long history in Burgenland, the Weninger family have been farming the area since at least 1828. In the 1930’s after a legal battle over a piece of farming equipment, they lost their farm, until 6 years later when “Uncle Franz” sent money back from America to buy it back and the Weninger’s promised to name their first born after him. Baby Franz is all grown up now, and him and his wife have expanded the farm to over 60 hectares of vineyards throughout Austria and Hungary, quite the turn around! This is from their ‘Character’ line, and is 100% Blaufränkisch sourced from a mix of old and young vines across their Burgenland properties. Organic and Biodynamically farmed, hand harvested and aged for 18 months is large neutral barrels. Sour cherry, dark wild berries, black olives, tobacco, great acidity, lively yet lean.
